Birthing Sites is an original artwork by Allison Day, a proud Dunghutti woman and artist working with Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation on the South Coast of New South Wales.
This artwork tells the story of sacred women’s birthing ground — a place of strength, care, and cultural knowledge passed down through generations. It represents the areas where women gathered to support one another through childbirth, guided by Elders and knowledge holders.
Each section within the painting reflects a different space within the birthing ground: places for preparation, birthing, rest, healing, and teaching. These areas were carefully chosen and protected, ensuring safety, privacy, and spiritual connection for mother and child.

The walking trails woven throughout the artwork symbolise the pathways travelled by women, aunties, sisters and grandmothers, as they moved between these spaces. These trails represent more than physical movement, they reflect the journey of life, connection to Country, and the passing on of cultural wisdom.

The pathways also show how women were never alone in this process. They were supported by community, guided by ancestors, and held by Country. Every step taken along these trails carries stories of resilience, love, and continuity.
Allison’s work is inspired by deep connections to Country, memory and lived experience. Through colour, form and symbolism, she creates visual stories that honour place, identity and cultural knowledge.
This print has been respectfully translated into scrub form in collaboration with the artist and Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation.
